Forget licking that doughnut — Ariana Grande may have committed her biggest misstep yet in the music video for her buzzy new single “Focus.”
The possible offense? Improperly playing a trumpet.
At the end of the jazzy video, a purple-haired Grande and her girl gang all grab trumpets and tubas — because, why not?
But her awkward tooting of the horn hasn’t gone over well with those who know a thing or two about the instrument.
So is she really playing it wrong?
Robert Sullivan — music professor at Northwestern University and a former principal trumpet with the New York Philharmonic — says there’s definitely something off.
“Her hand position holding the trumpet is not ideal, [n]or what most trumpet teachers would recommend,” he says.
Sullivan adds that most trumpeters place two to four fingers from their left hand above the slide — while Grande only uses one.
The awkward positioning could still work, however.
“Although not a traditional grip, this is a modified trumpet grip made famous by the late, great [trumpet player] Maynard Ferguson,” says Detroit Symphony Orchestra trumpet player William Lucas.
Except Sullivan says the pop star’s definitely not honoring the band legend.
“It is obvious, however, that she is not playing the trumpet, based on the lack of an embouchure,” he says.
Meaning? Her lips are way too spread out to be tooting any sort of horn.
